Lillian dropped herself into her seat, slinging her bookbag over one arm and letting it fall a few inches to the floor. She took out her binder and opened it, flipping through the pages without actually reading anything. Any excuse to attempt to ignore Loki, who for some reason had to be assigned a seat across from her. Animal science was Lillian's favorite class; perhaps not the most interesting because she knew most of it already, but by far the easiest. But ever since that night, she'd dreaded having to walk through that arched doorway and find her seat in front of his burning purple stare. October twenty-seventh. That's today. Lillian suddenly remembered, her mind wandering to the day-before-yesterday when she'd cried her heart out on her bed, then scanned through her diary and ripped the music she'd written into pieces. The shifter had been unable to throw the shreds away, however, and had stacked them on her bookshelf. Today's his birthday. she repeated to herself. What am I going to do?! Say 'Happy Birthday'? No way! Lillian realized that it was not Loki's fault that he didn't like her, but somehow she felt that it was. It was his fault, however, that he'd stolen her diary and read her thoughts, and even had the temerity to write in it. Thinking about that night made Lillian seethe inside. She almost missed the professor's statement. "...project, and you are to pick numbers from this box for partners. One works with two, three with four, five with six, and so forth." Lillian eyed the box, a brown cardboard one that looked like it was used to deliver a small calculator or something along those lines. Loki put his hand in, and withdrew a 16. The shifter watched the teacher approach her, and hold out the box for her numb fingers to reach into. Lillian's insides boiled, she prayed silently for anything but fifteen. She felt around in the folded papers, taking a deep breath. The teacher shifted her weight, obviously growing impatient. "Pick one." she said curtly. Lillian nodded, and settled on a smaller, more ripped piece than the rest. She pulled it out, and waited until the professor had moved on to the next student before working up the courage to unfold it. A huge 1 and 5 scrawled in red sharpie loomed in front of her gaze. No!

Loki looked at his scrap, then hers. "That puts us together, I do believe." Loki had shown Lillian no emotion since that night, and it did not change today.

You do believe, do you? Lillian repeated to herself saracstically, resisting the temptation to glare at Loki. She raised her eyes anyways; mostly out of habit of looking at someone when they spoke to her. "Yeah." she replied curtly, not wanting to say more.

"Let's work hard to get this done." Loki said, his eyes still.

Lillian said nothing, but let her gaze linger for another second and watched as the teacher distributed the rest of the numbers and began to explain the project. She listened without interest, having to force her mind to focus every five seconds. Class was dismissed, and the shifter got up stiffly from her seat, heading towards the door. She knew she should plan to do the project sometime; it was worth a test grade and was due in a week. Lillian knew she never procrastinated, but this time, she thought, she could do it just once. She hoped Loki wouldn't take the initiative and ask her to work on it that afternoon in the library or something.

"Shall we work on this today?" Loki asked in a cool voice, unwavering.

Lillian looked up sharply, grappling for an excuse. "I um... I think I'm busy today. Maybe... later?" she hated this, the way he talked to her as if she was some kind of stone wall or robot. Why did she have to pick that stupid, stupid paper?! Why couldn't the teacher have chosen some other way of picking partners, why did Loki have to be this way, why did he have to see her diary, why did she even write that stuff in her diary?! Lillian felt like she was going mad, and futility attempted to push her way out of the crowded corridor and escape Loki.

"Right, then tomorrow?" Loki asked as he stood to follow the shifter.

"I... er, okay." Lillian replied awkwardly, unable to think of another excuse. "...in... the library, I guess." she added, trying to walk faster without making it obvious she was trying to get away from Loki. It didn't work. Go away, go away! she thought frustratingly. Maybe I could get sick tomorrow. But then I'd have to do it the next day. This is useless.
-------
Lillian opened the door to her room, her eyes traveling subconsciously to her bookshelf to check the blue spine of her diary was still showing. She softly shut the door, and within the confines of her own room, emotions began to gather the courage to surface. Suddenly feeling exhausted, the shape-shifer dropped onto the bed and thought things over. Her eyes began to well up again, and she squeezed the tears out and wiped at them impatiently with her sleeve. Getting up, Lillian walked to her desk. She couldn't ignore Loki's birthday, no matter how much she hated him, though even that concept was just a lie she was trying to tell herself. With a sigh, Lillian reached over to her bookshelf and withdrew a pile of small, ragged rectangular pieces, and focused on taping them back together.

[I'm gonna double-post so you can have something to reply to]
Lillian finished, flipping through the sheets of music, the transparent tape on them flashing. Getting up, she reached for a sticky note. 'Happy Birthday, Loki' she wrote, and contemplated adding her name, but decided against it. She pushed back her chair, and picked up the stack of papers. Gazing at her own room's door, the shifter began to think twice. As she was taping, Lillian had already known that she'd have a hard time working up the courage to stick the sheets under the door of Loki's room like she'd planned. Now that was starting to creep up on her. Trying to close her mind to her doubtful thoughts, the fifteen-year-old quietly let her door click open, and wandered into the hallway. She headed for Loki's room, then paused and turned around. Lillian had paced for a while, deciding, and finally bit her lip and pushed the sonata under the doorway. She heard someone, probably Loki, get up from a chair inside, and ran lightly back to her own room and gently shut the door with a shaky hand. The loud pounding of her heart was interrupted shortly by the opening of a door down the hall.

Loki took a moment to read the music, then set off to Lillian's room. He knocked quietly and waited.

Oh, no. Lillian thought, beginning to panic. She hadn't considered the possibility that Loki would actually come to her room right away. The shifter had thought he'd read it, and then maybe a night's sleep would make it not such a big deal by the next day. Well, I can't ignore him now. she thought, and taking a shaky breath, gently opened the door. Lillian didn't know where to place her gaze, and hesitantly looked up just under Loki's eyes, afraid of meeting them directly. "Hey, Loki." she greeted, her voice sounding nervous despite how much she tried to hide her unease. "Happy Birthday."

"Thanks, but this has nothing to do with my birthday." Loki said, nodding "First, you right some amazing things. You're a genious. And second, I wanted to ask you to the Halloween dance."

Lillian felt her heart drop at Loki's first statement, but as he continued, she felt it leap into her throat and get stuck there. At first her mind whirled with incredulity, wondering if she was hearing things wrong. Didn't he say he didn't return my feelings? That he didn't want to... Lillian cut herself off, not caring. Then, impulsively, she stepped forward and threw her arms around the summer-god, close to choking with giddy disbelief and happiness when she said, "I'd love to go with you."

Loki tried to hide his blush and smile- the first expressions he'd shown since he had stolen her diary. "Thanks." He said, trying not to let his happiness get into his voice, and failing.
